ICLEI chose Triangle J as one of four communities to participate in the Challenge. As part of the award, Triangle J also received the Green Business Challenge Implementation Pack from ICLEI USA – Local Governments for Sustainability – and Office Depot.
ICLEI USA and Office Depot together with elected officials from the City of Austin, TX; City of Bellevue, WA; City of Chula Vista, CA; and the Triangle J Council of Governments, NC; marked this important national expansion of the Green Business Challenge program by ringing the Closing Bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, April 21.
The purpose of the Green Business Challenge is to involve commercial buildings and businesses in a friendly competition to save energy, reduce waste and water consumption, produce greener products, and implement other sustainable activities within their businesses. The very first project was started as a pilot project in the Chicago Department of Environment with ICLEI USA and it was titled “Green Office Challenge.”
In the duration of the project, companies will be challenged and will learn how to improve the efficiency and “greenness” of their day-to-day operations by reducing waste and energy, and by making smarter choices with purchases and travel to and from work. There are free trainings are resources available to the participants to help with their savings and success. The participants will be evaluated over a period of a year and those most successful will receive recognition from their local government at an award ceremony.
